Help your child identify themes and life lessons in stories
A theme is the central message, lesson, or moral that a story teaches. It's not WHAT happens in the story (that's the plot), but the LIFE LESSON the author wants readers to learn. For example, a story about a child learning to share might have the theme: "Sharing with others makes everyone happier."
On Florida's FAST assessment, third graders must identify themes AND explain how themes develop throughout stories using details from the text.
After reading any book together, practice finding the theme:
Remember: Help your child express the theme as a complete sentence, not just a word!
Themes aren't just in books! After watching a movie or TV show together:
Help your child understand the difference between topic and theme:
Practice turning topics into themes: Give a topic word and have your child create a full theme sentence.
After identifying a theme, play "Evidence Detective":
Themes appear in everyday situations too! When your child faces a challenge (like sharing with a sibling or trying something new), connect it to story themes: "Remember how the character in that book learned to be brave? You're being brave too!"
驴Qu茅 es el tema? El tema es la lecci贸n o mensaje principal que el autor quiere que los lectores aprendan de una historia. No es lo que pasa en la historia, sino la lecci贸n de vida.
