The Big Idea

We can compare fractions to see which is greater, less, or equal.

Some fractions that look different are actually the same amount—these are called equivalent fractions!

Comparing Fractions with the SAME Denominator

The Rule:

When denominators are the same, the pieces are the same size. Just compare how many pieces!

Compare: 2/6 and 5/6

2 sixths:

5 sixths:

2/6 < 5/6 because 2 pieces is less than 5 pieces!

Comparing Fractions with the SAME Numerator

The Rule:

When numerators are the same, you have the same number of pieces. Compare the size of pieces! Smaller denominator = BIGGER pieces.

Compare: 3/4 and 3/8

3 fourths (big pieces):

3 eighths (small pieces):

3/4 > 3/8 because fourths are bigger pieces than eighths!

Watch Out! Common Mistake

Don't think bigger denominator = bigger fraction!

1/8 is SMALLER than 1/4, even though 8 > 4. More cuts means smaller pieces!

Think: Would you rather have 1 slice of a pizza cut into 4 pieces or 8 pieces? The bigger slice comes from fewer cuts!

Equivalent Fractions

What Are They?

Equivalent fractions are different names for the same amount. They look different but cover the same space!

1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8

1/2

2/4

4/8

All three rectangles have the same amount shaded!

Your Turn: Compare These Fractions

Write <, >, or = in the circle.

Find Equivalent Fractions

Circle the fraction that is equivalent to the first one.

1/2 is equivalent to:    2/3 2/4 1/4

2/6 is equivalent to:    1/3 2/3 3/6

3/4 is equivalent to:    6/8 3/8 4/8
