The position of a digit determines its value. The digit 5 in 5,847 represents 5,000, while the 5 in 258 represents 50.
Break apart numbers by place value: 4,562 = 4,000 + 500 + 60 + 2. Zero placeholders don't need to be written.
Start from the left! Compare the largest place value first, then move right until you find a difference.
