In our number system, the position of a digit tells us its value.

Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right!

Understanding Place Value

Look at the number 5,847:

Standard Form: 5,847
Expanded Form: 5,000 + 800 + 40 + 7
Word Form: five thousand, eight hundred forty-seven

Rounding with Number Lines

To round, find which benchmark the number is closer to.

Example: Round 274 to the nearest hundred.

274 is closer to 300, so 274 rounds to 300.

Steps to Round:

  1. Find the two benchmarks (multiples of 10 or 100) the number is between.
  2. Draw a number line between them.
  3. Mark where your number falls.
  4. See which benchmark it's closer to!
