Time Is Everywhere!

We use time every day to plan our activities. Today we'll learn to tell time to the exact minute and figure out how much time passes between events!

Reading an Analog Clock

Remember: Short hand = HOUR | Long hand = MINUTES

12 3 6 9
3:00
12 3 6 9
3:30
12 3 6 9
3:45

Tip: Count by 5s for each number (12=0, 1=5, 2=10, 3=15...), then add extra minutes!

A.M. vs. P.M.

A.M. = Morning

12:00 midnight to 11:59 before noon

  • Wake up (7:00 a.m.)
  • Breakfast (7:30 a.m.)
  • School starts (8:15 a.m.)

P.M. = Afternoon/Night

12:00 noon to 11:59 before midnight

  • Lunch (12:30 p.m.)
  • School ends (3:15 p.m.)
  • Dinner (6:00 p.m.)

Elapsed Time = Time That Passes

Example: Soccer practice starts at 4:15 p.m. and ends at 5:45 p.m. How long is practice?

Use a number line!

4:15
5:00
5:45
+45 min
+45 min

Steps: 4:15 to 5:00 = 45 minutes. 5:00 to 5:45 = 45 minutes.

Total: 45 + 45 = 90 minutes = 1 hour 30 minutes

Your Turn!

1. Write the time shown on each clock.
12 3 6 9

12 3 6 9

2. Circle a.m. or p.m.

Eating breakfast at 7:30:   a.m.   /   p.m.

Going to bed at 9:00:   a.m.   /   p.m.

Eating lunch at 12:15:   a.m.   /   p.m.

3. The movie starts at 2:00 p.m. and ends at 3:45 p.m. How long is the movie?

The movie is long.

4. Dance class starts at 4:30 p.m. and lasts 1 hour 15 minutes. What time does it end?

Dance class ends at .
