Context Clues - Parent Activity Guide

Help your child figure out unfamiliar words using clues from the text

What Are Context Clues?

Context clues are hints within a text that help readers figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words. Instead of always reaching for a dictionary, skilled readers use the words and sentences AROUND an unknown word to determine its meaning. This is an essential reading skill tested on Florida's FAST assessment.

When your child encounters a new word, they should look at the surrounding text for hints about what the word might mean.

Five Types of Context Clues

Definition Clue: The author directly tells you what the word means ("A habitat, which means the place where an animal lives...")
Example Clue: Examples help explain the word ("Reptiles, such as snakes and lizards...")
Synonym Clue: A word with similar meaning is used nearby ("The dog was famished, or extremely hungry...")
Antonym Clue: An opposite word provides contrast ("Unlike his timid brother, Jake was bold...")
Inference Clue: You must use details and thinking to figure it out (no direct hint given)

Parent Tip: Model Your Thinking!

When YOU encounter an unfamiliar word while reading aloud, think out loud: "Hmm, I'm not sure what 'luminous' means. Let me look at the sentence: 'The luminous moon lit up the dark sky.' It says the moon 'lit up' the sky, so luminous probably means bright or glowing. Let me check - 'The bright moon lit up the dark sky.' Yes, that makes sense!"

When to Use a Dictionary

Context clues are great, but sometimes you need more help! If your child's guess doesn't quite fit, or if understanding the exact meaning is important, look up the word together. Compare the dictionary definition to what they guessed from context - this builds vocabulary AND context clue skills!
