In Grade 4, we work with numbers up to one million!

Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right. This pattern goes all the way to millions!

Understanding Place Value to Millions

Look at the number 4,527,836:

Reading Large Numbers: Use Periods!

4,527,836 has three periods:

Expanded Form: 4,000,000 + 500,000 + 20,000 + 7,000 + 800 + 30 + 6
Word Form: four million, five hundred twenty-seven thousand, eight hundred thirty-six

Rounding Multi-Digit Numbers

To round, find which benchmark the number is closer to.

Example: Round 3,672 to the nearest thousand.

3,672 is closer to 4,000, so 3,672 rounds to 4,000.

Steps to Round:

  1. Identify the place you're rounding to (circle it).
  2. Find the two benchmarks (multiples) the number is between.
  3. Find the midpoint between the benchmarks.
  4. Determine which benchmark the number is closer to!
