Passage 1: The Garden Lesson
(Literary Text)

Tyler had never been patient. He wanted everything right away - fast food, fast games, instant results. So when his grandfather suggested they start a vegetable garden together, Tyler rolled his eyes. "That takes forever, Grandpa. Can't we just buy vegetables at the store?"

His grandfather smiled. "Some things are worth waiting for. You'll see."

Reluctantly, Tyler helped plant tomato seeds. He watered them every day, checking for sprouts. After a week with no change, he was ready to give up. "Nothing's happening!"

"Keep going," his grandfather said. "Trust the process."

Three weeks later, tiny green leaves pushed through the soil. Tyler was amazed. Over the summer, he watched the plants grow taller, then flower, then produce small green tomatoes. When he finally picked a ripe, red tomato in August and took a bite, the taste was incredible.

"Grandpa, this is so much better than store tomatoes!" Tyler said.

"That's because you grew it yourself," his grandfather replied. "Patience makes things sweeter."

From then on, Tyler started approaching other things differently. He took his time on homework, practiced piano without rushing, and even started saving his allowance for things he really wanted. He discovered that his grandfather was right - good things really do come to those who wait.

Passage 2: The Amazing Octopus
(Informational Text)

Octopuses are among the most intelligent creatures in the ocean. These eight-armed animals have demonstrated remarkable problem-solving abilities that continue to amaze scientists.

One of the most impressive octopus abilities is camouflage. Octopuses can change their skin color and texture in milliseconds to blend in with their surroundings. They use special cells called chromatophores that contain different pigments. By expanding or contracting these cells, an octopus can become virtually invisible against rocks, coral, or sand.

Octopuses are also master escape artists. In laboratories and aquariums, they have been observed opening jars from the inside, squeezing through incredibly small spaces, and even figuring out how to turn off lights. Their soft bodies have no bones, allowing them to fit through any opening larger than their hard beak.

Perhaps most surprising is the octopus's ability to use tools. Scientists have observed octopuses carrying coconut shell halves to use as portable shelters. This behavior suggests advanced planning and thinking - abilities once thought to exist only in humans and some mammals.

With three hearts, blue blood, and a brain that extends into their arms, octopuses remain one of nature's most fascinating and mysterious creatures.

Passage 3: The Last Game
(Literary Text)

Amara had played soccer with the same team for five years. Now, in her final game before moving to another state, she wanted to win more than anything.

But by halftime, her team was losing 2-0. Amara had missed two shots, and doubt crept into her mind. During the break, her coach pulled her aside.

"Stop trying to do everything yourself," Coach Kim said. "Trust your teammates."

In the second half, Amara changed her approach. Instead of forcing shots, she passed to open teammates. When Sarah scored from Amara's assist, the team's energy shifted. Then Marcus scored to tie the game.

With two minutes left, Amara got the ball. She saw her teammate Jaylen wide open. Though part of her wanted to take the final shot herself, she remembered Coach's words. She passed. Jaylen scored.

They won 3-2. As her teammates surrounded her with cheers, Amara realized the victory felt better than any goal she could have scored alone. "Thanks for trusting me," Jaylen said.

Amara smiled. "That's what teammates are for."
