A fun 10-minute activity to do with your child!
Your child is learning about dividing decimals in math class. This skill is used every day when splitting costs, measuring ingredients, or calculating unit prices. This is an important skill for the Florida FAST test. Below are simple activities you can do at home to help your child succeed. No math expertise needed!
Say: "We have $15.60 to share equally among 4 people. How much does each person get?" Let your child work it out.
If they struggle, remind them: "Set it up like regular division. The decimal point in the answer goes directly above the decimal in $15.60."
Check with a calculator: 15.60 / 4 = 3.90. Each person gets $3.90!
Try more examples: $8.40 / 2, $12.75 / 3, $20.50 / 5
"When dividing a decimal by a whole number, bring the decimal point straight up into your answer!"
Pick an item: "This pack of 6 juice boxes costs $5.70. What is the price per juice box?"
Have your child divide: $5.70 / 6 = $0.95 per juice box
Challenge: "A ribbon is 2 meters long and costs $1.50. How much per half meter (0.5m)?" This involves dividing by a decimal: 1.50 / 4 pieces = $0.375 (about 38 cents)
"Finding the unit price helps us compare deals at the store. The item with the lowest price per unit is usually the better buy!"
Measure something (like a table that's 6 feet long). Ask: "If I want to place items that are each 0.5 feet wide, how many will fit?"
Explain: "To divide by 0.5, we can move both decimals one place right. 6 becomes 60, and 0.5 becomes 5. Now divide: 60 / 5 = 12."
Key insight: "Notice how dividing by 0.5 (a half) is like asking 'how many halves fit?' That's why the answer is BIGGER than what we started with!"
"When you divide by a number less than 1, your answer gets BIGGER. It's counterintuitive but makes sense: more halves fit into a whole than wholes fit into a whole!"
Just 10 minutes of practice at home can make a big impact on your child's confidence and success. Dividing decimals is a life skill they'll use when shopping, cooking, splitting costs, and throughout their math education. Thank you for being part of their learning journey!
