Year-Round Schooling: A Better Approach

Traditional summer vacation is an outdated practice that harms students' academic achievement. Schools should adopt year-round calendars with shorter, more frequent breaks instead. Research from Johns Hopkins University demonstrates that students lose an average of two months of math skills during summer vacation, a phenomenon known as "summer slide." Low-income students are particularly affected, losing up to three months of learning because they have fewer educational opportunities during the summer.

Year-round schools address this problem by distributing breaks throughout the year, preventing extended learning loss. A 2021 study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology found that students in year-round schools showed 5-10% higher achievement on standardized tests compared to peers in traditional schools. Dr. Maria Santos, an education researcher at UCLA, notes that "shorter, regular breaks allow students to stay mentally engaged while still providing necessary rest."

Critics claim that year-round schooling disrupts family vacations and summer activities. However, year-round schools still include substantial breaks - they're just spread throughout the year rather than concentrated in summer. Many families find the more frequent breaks actually allow for more travel opportunities and better work-life balance.

1
What is the CENTRAL CLAIM of this passage?
A
Summer vacation causes students to forget what they learned.
B
Schools should adopt year-round calendars with shorter, more frequent breaks.
C
Low-income students lose more learning during summer.
D
Family vacations are less important than education.
2
Which piece of evidence from the passage provides STATISTICAL support for the claim about summer learning loss?
A
Dr. Maria Santos's quote about mental engagement
B
The Johns Hopkins research showing students lose two months of math skills
C
The claim that traditional summer vacation is outdated
D
The statement that families find frequent breaks helpful
3
The author quotes Dr. Maria Santos. This is an example of which type of evidence?
A
Anecdote
B
Expert testimony
C
Personal opinion
D
Statistical data
4
Using the R.S.C. criteria (Relevant, Sufficient, Credible), evaluate the evidence in this passage. Which statement is MOST accurate?
A
The evidence is credible but not relevant to the claim.
B
The evidence is relevant but relies only on one personal story.
C
The evidence is relevant, sufficient (multiple sources), and credible (named universities and experts).
D
The evidence is vague and from unknown sources.
Why We Should All Learn to Code

Coding should be a required subject in all middle schools. Technology is everywhere these days, and everyone needs to understand how computers work. My older brother learned to code and now he has a great job making lots of money. If you don't know how to code, you'll probably struggle to find work in the future.

Some people say not everyone needs to code because there are plenty of other jobs. But those people are wrong. Computers are taking over everything. I read online that coding jobs are growing fast, which proves we all need to learn it.

Learning to code also makes you smarter. It's basically like learning a superpower. Plus, coding is fun once you get the hang of it. Schools that don't teach coding are failing their students and setting them up for failure in the modern world.

5
What is the CENTRAL CLAIM of this passage?
A
Technology is everywhere.
B
The author's brother has a good job.
C
Coding should be a required subject in all middle schools.
D
Coding is fun.
6
The author's brother learning to code is an example of which type of evidence?
A
Statistical data
B
Expert testimony
C
Anecdote (personal story)
D
Scientific research
7
"I read online that coding jobs are growing fast" is considered WEAK evidence because:
A
It's about coding jobs
B
The source is vague and unverifiable ("I read online")
C
It mentions growth
D
It's too short
8
Compare the evidence quality in Passage 1 (Year-Round Schooling) and Passage 2 (Coding). Which passage has STRONGER evidence, and why?
A
Passage 2 is stronger because it has more opinions.
B
Passage 1 is stronger because it cites specific studies, named experts, and statistics from credible sources.
C
Both passages have equally strong evidence.
D
Passage 2 is stronger because personal stories are more convincing than statistics.
9
Read the following claim and evidence. Explain whether the evidence is RELEVANT to the claim using specific reasoning.

Claim: "Schools should provide free breakfast to all students."
Evidence: "A study found that students who eat breakfast score 17% higher on standardized tests than students who skip breakfast."

10
Choose Passage 1 or Passage 2. Identify the central claim, describe TWO pieces of evidence the author uses, and evaluate whether the evidence is strong or weak using R.S.C. criteria. Use specific examples from the text.
