Home Activity: Expressions & Equations

A fun 10-minute activity to do with your child!

Dear Family,

Your child is learning about algebraic expressions and equations. This is the beginning of algebra! They're learning to use letters (variables) to represent unknown numbers and solve simple equations. This is an important skill for the Florida FAST test. Below are simple activities you can do at home to help your child succeed. No math expertise needed!

Activity 1: Mystery Number Game 5 min

You'll Need:

  • Paper and pencil
  • A calculator (optional, for checking)

Think of a number and give a clue: "I'm thinking of a number. When I add 8, I get 15. What's my number?" (Answer: 7)

Ask your child to write it as an equation: x + 8 = 15

Guide them to solve: "To get x alone, what's the opposite of adding 8?" (Subtracting 8). So x = 15 - 8 = 7.

Try more: "A number times 4 equals 20" (4x = 20, so x = 5) or "A number minus 6 is 11" (x - 6 = 11, so x = 17)

Key Phrase to Use:

"To solve an equation, we use the OPPOSITE operation. If something is being added, we subtract. If something is being multiplied, we divide. This undoes the operation and gets the variable alone!"

Activity 2: Shopping Equations 5 min

You'll Need:

  • Real or imaginary shopping items
  • Paper and pencil

Scenario: "You bought 3 identical books and spent $24. How much was each book?"

Write the equation together: 3x = 24 (3 times the cost of one book = 24)

Solve: "To find x, we divide both sides by 3. x = 24 / 3 = $8 per book."

Try another: "A shirt costs $12. After a discount, you paid $8. How much was the discount?" (12 - x = 8, so x = $4)

Real-World Connection:

"Variables are used everywhere - in science, business, and technology. When you see 'x', think of it as a mystery number you're trying to find!"

Activity 3: Translate the Words 5 min

You'll Need:

  • Paper and pencil

Say a phrase and have your child write the expression: "5 more than a number" = x + 5

Try these: "A number times 6" = 6x; "10 less than a number" = x - 10; "A number divided by 4" = x/4

Now evaluate! "If x = 3, what is 2x + 7?" (2(3) + 7 = 6 + 7 = 13)

Important Reminder:

"When you see 3x, it means 3 TIMES x, not 3 plus x! The multiplication sign is hidden when a number is right next to a letter."

Questions to Ask Your Child

You're Making a Difference!

Just 10 minutes of practice at home can make a big impact on your child's confidence and success. Understanding variables and equations is the gateway to algebra and higher mathematics. Thank you for being part of their learning journey!
