The Tryout

Jade had been Westbrook Middle School's starting point guard for two years. She knew every play, every drill, every expectation Coach Williams had. So when the new girl, Ava, walked into tryouts moving like she'd been born on a basketball court, Jade felt something cold settle in her stomach.

"Nice handles," Coach Williams called out as Ava weaved through the cones. "Where'd you transfer from?"

"Lincoln Academy. We made state finals last year." Ava wasn't bragging - just stating fact - but somehow that made it worse.

During the scrimmage, Jade found herself guarding Ava. Every time Jade thought she had her locked down, Ava found another gear. When Ava drove past her for an easy layup, Jade's cheeks burned.

After practice, Jade was shoving equipment into the closet when she heard footsteps behind her.

"Hey." It was Ava, holding out a water bottle. "That pick-and-roll you ran in the second half was really smart. I've never seen anyone read the defense that fast."

Jade stared at her. She'd expected gloating, not a compliment. "Thanks," she managed. "Your crossover is... really good."

Ava smiled. "Maybe you could show me that pick-and-roll tomorrow? I'm still learning the plays."

Jade hesitated. Part of her wanted to say no, to protect her position. But another part - the part that had fallen in love with basketball in the first place - recognized a chance to become something better.

"Sure," Jade heard herself say. "Meet me here before practice."

The Presentation

Leo adjusted his note cards for the fifteenth time. His hands were shaking. Public speaking had always terrified him - the staring eyes, the judgment, the fear of saying something stupid.

"You'll be fine," whispered Dylan, his presentation partner, with a confidence Leo envied. Dylan had never seemed nervous about anything in his life. He was the kind of person who raised his hand first, spoke loudest, and somehow made it look effortless.

"Easy for you to say," Leo muttered.

Dylan raised an eyebrow. "You think I'm not nervous?"

"You? Please."

Dylan was quiet for a moment. Then, almost reluctantly, he pulled up his sleeve to reveal the edge of his note cards, covered in tiny, cramped handwriting. "I've been practicing this presentation every night for a week. I write everything down because I'm terrified I'll forget what to say. My brain just... freezes sometimes."

Leo stared at the cards. "I had no idea."

"Most people don't." Dylan smiled, but it was different from his usual grin - smaller, more real. "I just got really good at faking confidence. Turns out, if you act confident long enough, sometimes you actually start to feel it."

"Class, we're ready for Leo and Dylan," the teacher announced.

Leo's heart hammered. But as they walked to the front, Dylan caught his eye and made a ridiculous face - crossing his eyes and puffing out his cheeks. Leo snorted, some of the tension releasing.

"Ready?" Dylan asked.

"No," Leo admitted. "But let's do it anyway."
