Home Activity: Expressions & Equations

A fun 10-minute activity to do with your child!

Dear Family,

Your child is learning to solve two-step equations - math problems where you need to "undo" two operations to find the answer. This skill is essential for algebra and appears frequently on the Florida FAST test. Equations are everywhere in real life: calculating costs, figuring out savings, and planning budgets! No math expertise needed!

Activity 1: The Shopping Challenge 10 min

You'll Need:

  • Paper and pencil
  • A receipt or shopping scenario
  • Calculator (optional, for checking)

Create a scenario: "You bought 3 identical items and paid $5 for shipping. The total was $26. What did each item cost?"

Write it as an equation together: 3x + 5 = 26 (where x = cost of one item)

Solve step-by-step: First subtract 5 from both sides (3x = 21), then divide by 3 (x = 7). Each item costs $7!

Check the answer: 3(7) + 5 = 21 + 5 = 26. It works!

Key Phrase to Use:

"When we solve equations, we work BACKWARDS. Since the last thing we did was add 5, the first thing we undo is subtract 5. Then we divide to find out what one item costs!"

Activity 2: Savings Goal Calculator 5 min

You'll Need:

  • Paper and pencil
  • A savings goal (real or imaginary)

Set up the scenario: "You already have $35 saved. You want to save $100 for a video game. If you save the same amount each week for 5 weeks, how much do you need to save per week?"

Write the equation: 5w + 35 = 100 (where w = weekly savings)

Solve: Subtract 35 (5w = 65), then divide by 5 (w = 13). Save $13 per week!

Make it personal: What's something your child wants to save for? Create an equation together!

Real-World Connection:

"Equations help us plan! If you know your goal and how long you have, you can figure out exactly what you need to do each day or week to reach it."

Activity 3: Mystery Number Game 5 min

You'll Need:

  • Paper and pencil

Parent thinks of a number (example: 6) and gives clues: "I'm thinking of a number. If I multiply it by 4 and then add 7, I get 31."

Child writes the equation: 4x + 7 = 31

Child solves: 4x + 7 = 31 → 4x = 24 → x = 6. "Your number is 6!"

Switch roles! Let your child make up mystery number puzzles for you to solve.

Important Reminder:

"Whatever operation you do to one side of the equation, you MUST do to the other side. The equation is like a balanced scale - keep it balanced!"

Questions to Ask Your Child

You're Making a Difference!

Solving equations is one of the most important algebra skills your child will learn. Just 10 minutes of practice at home can build confidence and improve test scores. When your child sees equations in real-world situations, math becomes meaningful. Thank you for being part of their learning journey!
