Understanding IEPs (Individualized Education Programs)

What is an IEP?

  • Legal document under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)
  • Created by a team: parents, teachers, specialists, administrator
  • Updated at least annually
  • Includes present levels, goals, accommodations, and services

Key Components Teachers Need to Know

Present Levels of Performance (PLOP) - Current academic and functional performance - Baseline data for goal-setting - Strengths and areas of need

Annual Goals - Measurable objectives for the year - Aligned to grade-level standards when possible - Your role: progress monitoring and documentation

Accommodations vs. Modifications - Accommodations: Change HOW student accesses learning (same standard) - Extended time, preferential seating, text-to-speech - Modifications: Change WHAT student is expected to learn (different standard) - Reduced assignments, alternative assessments, modified curriculum

Related Services - Speech therapy, occupational therapy, counseling - Transportation, assistive technology - Know the schedule so students don't miss critical instruction

Teacher Responsibilities

  1. Read and understand each student's IEP
  2. Implement accommodations consistently
  3. Document progress toward goals
  4. Communicate with special education teacher
  5. Attend IEP meetings when invited
  6. Maintain confidentiality
